OUR PHILOSOPHY
Our goal as farmers is to be stewards of the ground that we own and increase fertility and prevent soil erosion by the use of common sense livestock management. We feel that making our living in the highly competitive swine industry for the last 25 years, has given us a unique perspective on sheep production. Our goal in livestock production, simply put, is consistency. Consistency and uniformity of product is the main reason that the pork industry have taken so much market share away from other sectors in fighting for the consumer dollar. As the make-up of our society changes, we feel that lamb has the potential to become a significant protein source in the U.S.
Our production philosophy as is follows:
- Health is our #1 priority
- To manage sheep like cattle, in a grass based commercial setting
- Ewes need to perform and reproduce at regular intervals- we do not have time to baby-sit reproductively unsound animals
- We believe in line-breeding to improve genetic consistency and predictability.
- We adhere to our beliefs by implementing individual performance testing on our sheep. We judge our sheep not only by observation, but also by weighing them regularly to test their adjusted daily gain and feed efficiency. By selecting our sheep based on performance, fertility, efficiency, and hardiness we want to provide a profitable, low maintenance, sheep to the registered and commercial breeder.
Selection Criteria
- Structure and Soundness
- Hardiness
- Growth Rate
- Milking Ability
- Lambing Ease
- Lambing Rate
- Feed Efficiency
- Out of Season Breeding
